GO WITH THE FLOW OF THE TRIP, LET FOOD GUIDE THE WAY
Six years of marriage and a 15-month-old baby boy, no way either wife or I will leave him behind and yes we still have our fur baby Mochito, but our children seemed to not really know what to do with each other just yet.
On our fifth anniversary, we decided that Zev will go with us everywhere since all we did that anniversary was talk about him. So we decided a quick venture to San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO
Why San Antonio? First, if anyone has a little one you know you only have 2 to 3 hours with a child in a car seat. Second, because I am not sure I can do a 24 – 36-hour road trip which if you live in Texas you would understand. Third, because the wife kept going on and on about it being its 300th birthday.
GET TO THE FOOD
Now as you know we love visiting historic places and we also try our best to locate some great eats. Part of the adventure is trying places that are not mainstream and possibly have something interesting to talk about. So this was our list, it isn’t a long one but in our minds definitely doable. I am more of let’s wing it type of person, but the wife is a list type of person. Granted I never complain about her list, she does turn up some amazing places, even though I get lucky and find something not exactly planned.
So this was our list, not a long one but we had one.

WHAT DID WE ACTUALLY EAT
So instead of taking the more direct route I took an around about through San Marcus and since everyone knows I love Hamburgers I decided to ask the wife to do her magic and find me a good place and she found Centerpoint Station.
But that’s not what you’re here about. By the time we reached our destination, unpacking and cat nap/ freshen up we load Zev in a stroller and as luck had would have it got cold and rainy afternoon. So we walk between the raindrops and made it to Pizza Friday!
- RIO DE GELATO: Walking distance from our hotel and not directly on the river walk, but well worth going top side. I love Pizza and after traveling to Italy myself I have come to realize making a good pizza isn’t easy. This is some very authentic style Italian Pizza and yes it comes with its very own little Italian man named Alfredo who throws the pizzas and makes his own gelato. He makes other traditional Italian dishes but again it was pizza Friday an Anderson tradition! Baby loves pizza just as much as his parents. We got a large pizza and we ate the whole thing. Stuffed to the brim we appreciated the walk back to the hotel.
- Taqueria Trompo: I love finding a hole in the wall and my wife knows it. She found this place because I was craving street tacos. We went here for lunch, sorry it isn’t on the river walk so you have to get in your car and drive, but it is worth it. It is a husband and wife owned business and if you are lucky you might get to meet their extremely sweet and talkative daughter. Let’s just say this is what true tacos taste like! Every ingredient is fresh and authentic. They do have Burritos and other menu items but their tacos are to die for. Honestly, I could easily have stayed all day eating them.
TIP: The McNay is a short drive, make an art and taco day!
- CASA RIO: We decide to give the river walk a chance, but if you read the post about our time on the River Walk you know it was not stroller friendly (meaning daddy gets to carry baby and stroller up and down stairs). We eventually just stopped at the easiest location and they had a big crowd waiting to be seated. It was easier to accommodate us since it was just two and a baby. We overheard several people say they always eat there. Your typical Mexican restaurant with your typical Mexican Items. The food is good and of course, you get the view of the river walk. (no photos of this place)
- LULU’S CAFE & BAKERY: The morning going back home we had every intention to eat breakfast here. We had tried the day before and couldn’t find parking. It must be amazing because there was no parking available and there were lines wrapped around the building. They have this 3 lbs cinnamon roll that I wanted to try and no you don’t have to go to San Antonio to try it they will actually make it and ship it to you! Well, I made wife go in as I drove around to get one to take home with us. She did ask when the best day to go was and the lady told her Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually easier to park and sit and eat. We will be making a return to try their breakfast.
I know this was on the shorter end of restaurants than what I usually recommend but we only talk about the places we enjoy even if that leaves with less to write about. Some of the places on the list just had too long of a line because they have become way too popular. One had more than an hour and a half line wait. With a baby, you cant wait that long and we didn’t want to wait either. We will stick to trying to find those undiscovered or not as touristy places.
THAT’S IT, FOR NOW
We had a drive back and we were still going to be stopping. Late lunch was on the Bastrop Texas, at Paw Paw’s Catfish. That alone was so good, I have the wife make plans on returning to Bastrop for a few more days. Cute little town by the way, plus good food.
We will be back to San Antonio, to see its charm, the art and try more food. Hopefully with better weather and with a walking toddler.
